Ramadan 2027 on the Nile in Cairo

Ramadan 2027 falls in the middle of the cruise season, and Cairo's evenings change shape around the sunset meal. Here is what that means for a dinner boat or a felucca, and what to ask before you book.

Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, and in 2027 it lands in February and early March. That is high season on the Nile, with cool evenings and full hotels. Visitors are not expected to fast, and the boats keep sailing. What shifts is the clock: the city stops at sunset to eat, then comes alive late into the night.

This post sets out the expected dates, the iftar times you will plan around, and the handful of things that change on a Cairo dinner cruise or felucca. Where the change depends on one boat, we say so and tell you what to check.

The quick answer

Ramadan 2027 is expected to start on Monday 8 February and end with Eid al-Fitr on 9 or 10 March, subject to the moon sighting. Iftar in Cairo falls at sunset, from about 5:45 p.m. in the first week to just after 6 p.m. in early March. Dinner cruises and feluccas run, but shows and timings can shift, and the traffic in the hour before iftar is the worst of the day.

When is Ramadan 2027 in Egypt?

Egypt's astronomy institute expects the first day of fasting on Monday 8 February 2027, with Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March if the month runs 30 days. The official dates depend on the crescent moon.

Al-Watan reported the projection from Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in September 2026: Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday 8 February, and Eid falls on 10 March after a 30-day month. The UAE's astronomers, quoted by The National, also give 8 February and put Eid on 9 or 10 March. A few travel calendars show 9 February instead. Treat the first and last day as one-day ranges.

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta confirms the start on the evening of the sighting, the night before the first fast. If your trip sits on the edge of the month, plan both evenings either way. The table uses the estimates published by Wego; check the daily imsakiah (prayer timetable) once the month begins.

Do Nile dinner cruises in Cairo run during Ramadan?

Yes. The boats keep sailing, and some add iftar and suhoor sailings. What can change is the show and the departure time.

Ramadan is a busy month on the river for Egyptians too. CairoScene wrote up iftar and suhoor on a Pharaonic-style boat in central Cairo, served for the whole month. For a visitor the bigger question is the entertainment. One Cairo operator, Sun Pyramids Tours, states on its own Nile Pharaoh dinner cruise page: "During Ramadan, there is no belly dancer."

That line is about one boat, not every boat. The Opal dinner cruise lists tanoura, belly dancing and live music, and its listing also says entertainment may vary by day. If the belly dance is the reason you are booking, ask the operator through the booking page before you pay.

Can you drink alcohol on a Nile cruise during Ramadan?

Visitors can, where it is sold, but supply shrinks. On the Cairo dinner boats on this site, alcohol is not part of the price in any month.

Egypt bars tourist venues from selling alcohol to Egyptians during Ramadan, a rule Egypt Independent reported being widened to other religious holidays in 2012. Many liquor outlets close for the month and hotels often cut bar hours or move service to one room, according to Egypt Tours Plus. The same source says alcohol on board the multi-day Nile cruise ships is not affected.

For a Cairo evening, it rarely matters. The Opal listing includes two bottles of water per booking and nothing stronger. The private felucca dinner includes unlimited hot and cold soft drinks, explicitly non-alcoholic. If a drink with dinner matters to you, have it at your hotel before or after, and ask there first.

Is a sunset felucca a good idea during Ramadan?

It can be the best hour of the day, as long as you plan the drive. Sunset is iftar, and the streets jam in the hour before it.

In Ramadan the whole city heads home for the sunset meal at once. Wego advises driving defensively 30 to 45 minutes before sunset, and Pure Nile Tours puts it bluntly: do not plan driving around sunset. Then the streets go quiet while people eat, and fill again an hour or two later.

A sunset sail means your pickup falls right in that rush. The private felucca sail includes hotel pickup, and the listing warns that pickup time may vary with traffic, which is how you lose part of a one-hour sail. Our take: book a mid-afternoon slot and be on the water by 4 p.m., or go after iftar when the roads clear. Your crew may be breaking their fast at sunset too, so a few dates or a sweet to share go down well.

What happens on the Nile during Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid starts on 9 or 10 March 2027 and Egypt usually takes a three-day public holiday. Expect a busy river, lit-up feluccas and Egyptian families everywhere.

Eid is a family holiday spent outdoors, and the Nile is one of the places Cairo goes. Egyptian Streets lists a felucca ride as a classic Eid outing and notes that some feluccas are decked out with music and lights. It is a cheerful time to be on the water, and a crowded one.

Book Eid evenings early, ideally when the date is confirmed, and expect the corniche and the bridges to be packed. The free 24-hour cancellation on every boat here means booking both possible Eid nights costs nothing if you cancel the wrong one in time.

What should you check on the listing before booking a Ramadan cruise?

Five things: the departure time against iftar, whether the full show runs, what dinner is served, the pickup time, and the cancellation terms.

Most of this sits on the booking page or takes one message to the operator. Ask before you pay, not on the pier.
