Booking choice: The Opal dinner cruise. Check dates Tour details
Two questions come up before almost every Nile booking: is it safe right now, and what do I wear? The first has an official answer from the US State Department and the UK Foreign Office. The second has a simple rule that changes between the boat and the temple.
We quote the official advice as it stood on 15 October 2026 and link to it, because travel advice changes. Check the current version before you fly.
The quick answer
The US State Department rates Egypt Level 2, exercise increased caution, and its do-not-travel areas are North and Middle Sinai and the border zones, not the Nile Valley. The UK Foreign Office treats Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel the same way. The practical risks are no doctor on most boats, bilharzia in the river, heat and scams. Dress smart casual on board and cover shoulders and knees at temples and mosques.
Is it safe to go on a Nile cruise at the moment?
Yes, by official advice. The US rates Egypt Level 2 and the UK Foreign Office advises against no part of the Nile Valley.
The US advisory, issued 15 July 2025, says "Level 2 - Exercise increased caution" for Egypt, mainly for terrorism (US State Department). It names tourist sites among potential targets and adds that the government has boosted security there. The UK Foreign Office advice, updated 4 August 2026 and still current in mid-October, lists Luxor, Qena, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings as exceptions to its Western Desert warning (GOV.UK).
On the ground, expect checkpoints on the roads and bag scanners at temples and hotels. Expect the same on the early road trip to Abu Simbel. Travelling against FCDO advice can void travel insurance, but a Nile cruise doesn't.
Where are the do-not-travel zones in Egypt?
North and Middle Sinai and the border areas, according to the US. The UK adds the Libyan border strip and much of the Western Desert.
- US, do not travel: the Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula, and Egyptian border areas, which are military zones (State Department).
- US, avoid: all travel to the Western Desert; the Black and White Deserts only with a licensed tour company.
- UK, against all travel: within 20 km of the Libyan border and the North Sinai Governorate (FCDO).
- UK, all but essential travel: parts of South Sinai and Ismailiyah, the Hala'ib Triangle and most of the Western Desert.
None of these touches Cairo, Luxor, Aswan or the river between them.
How safe is Cairo for tourists now?
Safe for normal sightseeing, with ordinary big-city caution. The usual problems are traffic, touts and overcharging rather than crime.
Cairo is one of the biggest cities in Africa, and crossing the road is the most dangerous thing most visitors do. Use Uber or Careem, which quote fixed prices, instead of street taxis with broken meters (In Your Pocket). Keep small notes for tips, because change is often short.
Women travelling alone may get unwanted attention in the street, mostly verbal. Dressing conservatively in the street, sitting in the back of taxis and booking evening trips with pickup cut most of it. The dinner cruise with hotel pickup brings you from the lobby to the boat and back, which is the simplest night out in Cairo.

No doctor on most boats, bilharzia in the river, heat and stomach upsets. Egypt is free of malaria.
- Medical care: the State Department notes that most Nile cruise boats don't have a doctor, though some have a medical practitioner, and that emergency care is limited outside the cities. Buy travel insurance that covers evacuation, and pack your own medicines.
- Bilharzia: parasites in freshwater snails infect people through the skin; the CDC lists the Nile valley as a risk area (CDC). Don't swim, wade or dangle your feet in the river.
- Heat: from May to September, temple days pass 40°C in Luxor and Aswan. Drink often and plan sites for early morning.
- Food and water: drink bottled water and go easy on salads on the first days.
- Mosquitoes: a nuisance at dusk, not a malaria risk: WHO certified Egypt malaria-free in October 2024 (WHO).
What scams should you watch for around Nile trips?
The site-is-closed trick, camel rides that cost more at the end, unofficial guides and felucca prices that switch from per boat to per person.
The common ones, as listed by In Your Pocket:
- "It's closed today": a driver or helper says a site is shut, then takes you to a shop on commission. Check opening hours yourself.
- Camel and horse rides at Giza: a low price at the start, a much higher one at the end. Agree the full price, return included, before you get on.
- Unofficial guides: men who attach themselves at a site and then ask for money. A firm no thanks works.
- Felucca price switches: a captain quotes per boat, then claims per person, or stretches the sunset sail and charges extra. Settle the total and duration first.
A pre-booked boat with a fixed price removes the last one entirely. The private felucca sets the price, the hour on the water and the pickup in advance.

Smart casual. Shorts and T-shirts on deck by day, something a little smarter for dinner, and no formal wear required.
Multi-day ships keep it relaxed: swimwear by the pool, casual clothes at lunch, trousers or a dress at dinner. Nobody needs a jacket and tie.
The Cairo dinner boats have no stated dress code in their listings. Most guests wear what they'd wear to a nice restaurant. Bring a layer for the open deck: from November to March, Cairo nights drop to about 10 to 16°C on average, and the river breeze makes it feel cooler.

What should you wear to temples and mosques?
Cover shoulders and knees at both. At mosques, women also cover their hair, and everyone takes off their shoes.
Temples are outdoor sites, so the rules are about sun as much as modesty: loose linen or cotton that covers shoulders and knees, a wide hat, sunglasses and closed flat shoes for sand and uneven stone. At Abu Simbel and in the Valley of the Kings, there is little shade.
Mosques such as Muhammad Ali on the Citadel, visited on the 8-day tour, ask for more: long sleeves and long trousers or skirts, a headscarf for women and shoes off at the door. Carry a light scarf in your daypack and you're covered for both.

What should you pack for a Nile cruise?
Light covering clothes, a warm layer, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, flat shoes, a scarf, your medicines and small cash for tips.
- Clothes: breathable long trousers or skirts, light long sleeves, swimwear for the ship's pool, one smarter outfit.
- A warm layer: desert nights and 4 a.m. starts for Abu Simbel are cold in winter.
- Sun kit: hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, a refillable bottle.
- Health: repellent, stomach remedies, any prescriptions; there's probably no doctor on board.
- Money: small Egyptian pound notes for tips, clean and untorn.
- For the balloon: a jacket; the dawn launch over Luxor is chilly.

Is it safe for women to take a Nile cruise?
Yes, by the same official advice that applies to everyone. On the ship and on guided excursions you're with a group. In Cairo's streets, expect some verbal attention; conservative dress and pre-booked transfers reduce it.
Can I wear shorts on a Nile cruise?
On the ship, yes. At temples, knee-length or longer is the respectful choice, and at mosques long trousers or skirts are required.
Is there a doctor on Nile cruise ships?
Usually not. The US State Department says most Nile cruise boats don't have a doctor, though some have a medical practitioner. Bring medicines and travel insurance.
Can I swim in the Nile?
Don't. The CDC lists Egypt's Nile valley as a schistosomiasis (bilharzia) risk area, and the parasite enters through the skin. Use the ship's pool.
