Booking choice: The 4-day cruise from Cairo. Check dates Tour details
Search for a Nile cruise from Cairo to Luxor and you'll find plenty of trips sold that way. Read the itinerary and almost every one begins with a flight. The regular cruise ships sail only between Luxor and Aswan, and the long stretch of river through Middle Egypt is left to the occasional specialist charter.
That leaves two real ways south: a one-hour flight or a night on the sleeper train from Giza. Here is how each works, how to book it, and how many days to give the whole trip.
The quick answer
Regular Nile cruises don't sail from Cairo. Fly to Luxor or Aswan in about an hour or an hour and a half, or take the sleeper train from Giza, which leaves around 7.30 p.m. and reaches Luxor at about 6 a.m. Then join a 3 or 4-night cruise. Give the whole trip at least 5 days, or 7 to 8 with Cairo. Long Cairo to Aswan sailings exist, like the 14-night SS Misr charter in 2026, but they are rare.
Can you take a Nile cruise from Cairo to Luxor?
Only on rare specialist sailings. The regular cruise ships run between Luxor and Aswan, so trips sold as from Cairo fly you south first.
The standard Nile cruise runs 4 nights upstream from Luxor to Aswan, or 3 nights downstream (Rickshaw Travel). Look at the 4-day cruise from Cairo and day 1 is an early pickup and a flight to Aswan. The 8-day tour flies to Luxor on day 4. Viking's 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids trip does the same: three nights in Cairo, then a flight to Luxor (Travel Weekly).
A package that says from Cairo is still useful. It handles the flights, the airport transfers and the guide, and you sleep on the ship from the first night south.
From Cairo to the river in Aswan in one morning: flights, guide and three nights on a 5-star ship.
Check dates for the 4-day cruise from CairoAre there long Nile cruises from Cairo to Aswan?
A few, run as private charters. The best known in 2026 was a 14-night sailing on the 1918 steamer SS Misr, from Cairo to Aswan in April and May.
Ancient World Tours chartered the SS Misr, a restored steamer once owned by King Farouk, with 24 cabins including 8 suites, for a 14-night voyage from 24 April to 8 May 2026 (Ancient World Tours). The route stopped where ordinary cruises don't: the Meidum pyramid, the rock tombs of Beni Hasan, Tuna el-Gebel, Amarna, Abydos and Dendera, before Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan.
Trips like this are planned a year or more ahead, sell by waitlist, and run once a season at most. No 2027 date was published when we checked. If Middle Egypt is the point of your trip, watch the specialist operators; otherwise, fly south and spend the saved week elsewhere.

Should you fly or take the sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor?
Fly if time matters: about an hour to Luxor. Take the sleeper train if you want to save a hotel night and enjoy the ride: about 10 hours 45 minutes from Giza.
Since 2023 the sleeper, long known as the Watania or Ernst train, has been run by Abela. It now starts at Cairo's Upper Egypt station at Bashtil, opened in October 2024, with Giza as the boarding point most travellers use (Seat 61). Here is how the two compare:
| Flight | Abela sleeper train | |
|---|---|---|
| From | Cairo airport | Giza station (or Bashtil) |
| Time | About 1 hour to Luxor, 1.5 hours to Aswan | 19:20 or 19:45 from Giza, Luxor at about 06:05 to 06:30 |
| Comfort | A seat for about an hour | Single or double sleeper cabins; sharing a double costs less per person |
| Book | Airline or package | abelatrains.com or the Abela app, 2 months ahead; resellers charge more |
| Best for | Short trips, early cruise check-in | Saving a hotel night, the travel itself |
Cabin details are from Trvlogue's 2026 guide; times from 12Go, which also sells a private cabin for two on the Giza to Luxor run, well above the Abela price. Book with Abela direct, and expect delays.
Is the sleeper train a good way to start a Nile cruise?
It works, if your ship boards in the afternoon. Arriving at 6 a.m. after a night of broken sleep, you'll have hours to kill in Luxor before check-in.
Travellers who have taken it describe a light dinner served soon after Giza and breakfast before arrival, and few praise the food. The real issue is timing: if your ship boards later in the day, a 6 a.m. arrival means a long morning. Leave your bags at the ship's reception if it allows, and spend the morning at Karnak, which is open early and quieter before the tour groups arrive.
For the return north, the train is easier: board in Luxor or Aswan in the evening, wake up in Giza. Skip it altogether if you're travelling with small children or on a 4-day schedule; the flight saves a day you can't spare.

How many days do you need for a Nile River cruise?
Three nights downstream or four nights upstream on the ship, plus a travel day each way from Cairo. Seven to eight days covers Cairo, the cruise and Abu Simbel.
Ship schedules set the minimum. The Oberoi Zahra sells 3, 4 and 7-night cruises (Oberoi Hotels); most ships follow the 3 or 4-night pattern. Dahabiyas take longer: Nour el Nil runs 6 days from Esna to Aswan (i-escape).
Our rule of thumb: 4 days is the shortest real cruise from Cairo and feels rushed, with a 4 a.m. start for Abu Simbel and a full temple day before the flight home. Seven or eight days lets you see Giza and Cairo as well, at a pace that leaves room to sit on deck and watch the river. Ten or more makes sense only with a dahabiya or a long Viking-style package.
What does a sample itinerary from Cairo look like?
Four common shapes: the 4-day fly-cruise-fly, the 8-day tour with Cairo, a DIY trip by train, and a long cruise-line package.
| Trip | Days | How it runs |
|---|---|---|
| 4-day cruise | 4 | Fly to Aswan, Philae; Abu Simbel and Kom Ombo; Edfu; balloon, Valley of the Kings, Karnak, fly back |
| 8-day tour | 8 | 3 nights Cairo with Giza and Sakkara; fly to Luxor; 4 nights to Aswan; Abu Simbel; fly back |
| DIY by train | 6 to 7 | Sleeper train to Luxor; 4-night cruise to Aswan; fly or train back to Cairo |
| Viking Pharaohs & Pyramids | 12 | 3 nights Cairo; fly to Luxor; 8-day cruise; last night in Cairo |

Cairo, Giza and four nights on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, with flights and every entrance ticket included.
Explore the 8-day Egypt tour with cruise Tour detailsWhich direction is better, Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?
Upstream from Luxor gives 4 nights and more time; downstream from Aswan gives 3 nights for less money. The sites are the same.
The Nile flows north, so a ship from Aswan to Luxor rides the current and finishes a night sooner. The 4-day cruise goes this way, ending with a balloon flight and the Valley of the Kings before the flight home. The 8-day tour goes upstream, Luxor to Aswan, with an extra night that softens the pace.
Pick by your flights. If you're flying home from Luxor, end there. If Abu Simbel is a priority, finish in Aswan, the closest base, about four hours away by road.

Do you see the pyramids on a Nile cruise?
No. The Giza pyramids stand on the desert plateau west of Cairo, several kilometres from the river, and the cruise ships sail hundreds of kilometres further south.
Not from a Cairo dinner boat either: the city's river reach between Maadi and Zamalek is lined with towers, not tombs. Visit Giza by day and keep the Nile for the evening. The SS Misr charter is the exception that proves the rule: it stopped at the Meidum pyramid south of Cairo, which most visitors never see.
For older pyramids without the Giza crowds, the Sakkara, Memphis and Dahshur day trip includes the Step Pyramid and the Bent and Red Pyramids, and its VIP option adds a felucca sail.
